Introduction to the University of Sussex
Sussex University opened its doors in 1961, in a beautiful 200-acre park four miles from bold, breezy Brighton. Sir Basil Spence's red brick architecture won prizes in its day and recent developments, such as the Sussex Innovation Centre, have kept it feeling relatively fresh. Back in the 1960's, Sussex was one of the grooviest universities anywhere and it has much going on to this day.
It is famous for the way it developed interdisciplinary study, enabling barriers between different subjects in arts and sciences to be broken down. The idea is that a variety of modules from different disciplines enhance a student's understanding of his or her main subject. At the moment, Sussex is looking at its system in the hope of allowing students to study more creative combinations: whether this is window-dressing or a project with a genuine chance of widening an already panoramic scope of degrees remains to be seen.
Sussex has many links with the USA and Europe and students on a range of courses may opt to study overseas for a year. This international outlook feeds back into the university itself - in 1997/98 over one-fifth of students came from abroad.
The students' union offers bars, activities and up to ten events each week and, if the campus begins to pall, you can drop in on Fatboy Slim in Brighton itself.
Among the alumni of Sussex are Ian McEwan, Alexandra Shulman, whose editorship has presided over a rise in circulation at Vogue, and Peter Wilby, editor of The New Statesman.
