大学简介

Introduction to the Sheffield Hallam University

One of Britain's first three polytechnics, formed in 1969 from two colleges of art and technology, Sheffield Hallam won its university status in 1992. Like Sheffield University, Hallam is a large establishment with over 20,000 students. Some 45,000 students study at Sheffield's universities, contributing to the city's regeneration and feeding its great social scene.

Hallam deliberated about moving its main site from the city centre, but decided to stay and take part in bringing life back to Sheffield's heart, which has been badly affected by the Meadowhall shopping centre further up the M1.

In recent years, Hallam has spent over £50m to enable it to take in more students and provide better facilities. Engineering and information technology have new buildings; the Adsetts Centre is a state of the art library; and the Sheffield Business School - which houses Hallam's biggest department - has its own city centre site.

Hallam has a different agenda from Sheffield University: its focus is on providing students with the skills and knowledge to find work on graduation. Almost half the students are on sandwich courses, many of which are designed with input from commerce and industry.
