Introduction to the UCL
University College London was founded in 1826 for the purpose of educating the growing middle classes in an atmosphere untouched by Anglican doctrine and prejudice. In those days, Catholics, Jews and nonconformists could not receive an education at Oxford or Cambridge, and UCL developed as a worthy alternative. Its academic standards are high, although the proportion of state school students is better only than Bristol, Oxbridge, LSE and Imperial. Its reputation is international: in 1997/98, 25% of students came from overseas.
This is one of Britain's leading multi-faculty establishments and courses are strong across the board, from history, law and anthropology to geological and organismal sciences. Among the subjects that UCL was instrumental in adding to curricula everywhere are languages, geography and fine arts.
UCL is located very close to London's West End, where there is enough going on to consume you for several lifetimes. Accommodation - guaranteed for all first years - is, for the most part, within walking distance as well.
As you might expect of an institution this size, with almost 10,000 undergraduates, there is every kind of society under the sun. The students' union runs entertainment of all kinds.
Among the alumni are legions of the great and good: Francis Crick, Margaret Hodge, David Gower, Jonathan Dimbleby and Alexander Graham Bell among them.
